Zevenbergen Charges to Victory in Bob DeBoer Memorial!
The Bob DeBoer Memorial was toughted all season long as one of the biggest events to happen at Rapid Speedway this summer and the drivers answered the call. 107 total racers passed through the backgate last Friday night to set up a great night of racing.
Elijah Zevenbergen made it known that when big races come up he is the man to beat, but it didn’t come easy for the driver out of Ocheyedan, IA. A tough heat race left Zevenbergen on the outside looking in for the main event as he was forced to run the B feature just to qualify. After winning the Last Chance Race and starting 17th on the field would work his way through the field to 4th after the first 10 lap stage before the competition caution flew where all drivers would go through a pit stop challenge of changing both left side tires as fast as possible to set up the lineup for the 2nd 15 lap stage to find the winner. Dustin Gulbrandson’s crew put the 6 car on the front with a pit stop of 42 seconds while Zevenbergen’s team would get him out 4th. Zevenbergen wasted little time making his way to the front of the field to pick up the $1,500 payday in memory of the guy who built the stock car shootout into what it is today. Rick Gregoire claimed the first stage, but would come home 2nd overall followed by Darrin Korthals, Josh Kelderman, and Dustin Larson.
In the other main event the Midwest Power Series Sprint Cars brought 28 cars to the field. Jack Dover took the lead off the front row to start the race and showed the speed he has had all year long, but a red flag came out just a few laps in and closed his gap right away. Justin Henderson from Tea, SD moved his way up 5 spots in the short time to set him up to make a run on the restart. Back to green Henderson shot to the topside of the racetrack to make his way into third and then into 2nd. In the meantime, race leader Dover pulled off the pace with motor issues handing the lead over to Henderson. He would take the lead into lap traffic and make the moves necessary to go top and bottom and work his way around the slower cars and pick up the $2,000 victory. Dusty Ballenger would claim second ahead of Jody Rosenboom, Brandt O’banion, and Eric Lutz.
The Sportsman class saw a great battle upfront to start the race as Leon Sneller grabbed the early lead with a 3 wide battle behind him between Bill and Brian Kroon and Wyatt Steenhoven. On the next lap Tyler Bradley would jump into the mix and make it a four car battle. Steenhoven managed to emerge as the front runner from that battle and would work his way past Sneller for the lead and run away to his 2nd win of the season. Bill and Brian would claim 2nd and 3rd respectively ahead of Bradley and Brandon Boeve.
It had been a long time coming for Kevin Joachim to reach victory lane, but he finally got the monkey off his back and beat the bad luck bug. Joachim took the lead from the pole position, but felt the pressure all race long as Tyler Tesch stayed hot on his bumper all race long. Joachim would not falter and grabbed his first win of the season. Tesch settled for second ahead of Tyler Johnson and Jake Richards, while Dereck VanVeldhuizen charged from 10th to 5th.
Another driver looking for a big break on the season was Tyler Schlumbohm in the Hobby Stock class. He has battled having and good race care behind Dustin Gulbrandson all season. Tonight was his night as Gulbrandson had issues in the heat race and was forced to the B feature and starting from the tail of the main event. Schlumbohm started outside row 2 and worked his way to the front using the bottom of the raceway and making the pass on lap 3, but Tracy Halouska would not let him go. Halouska stayed attached to his bumper and would even show his nose a few times, but it was the driver from Sioux Falls showing his strength on the night and would take the win ahead of Halouska. Brady Klaahssen would settle for third ahead of Nick Brady and Logan Fitzpatrick.
